What is a screen-out?
Many surveys are only meant for people who meet certain requirements, for example parents of young children or people who recently bought a car. To check this, a survey asks a few qualification questions at the beginning. If you do not match the target group, the survey ends and you see a message saying so. This is called a screen-out. It is normal and happens to everyone.
Why it happens
- You are outside the target group. Your answers to the qualification questions did not match what the researcher needs.
- The group is already full. The researcher has enough people like you (see Quota full).
- You already took this survey. The same survey can appear in different research panels, but each survey can be completed only once. If you already answered it elsewhere, it is rejected as a duplicate.
- Your location does not match. Using a VPN, or taking surveys from abroad, leads to screen-outs.
- Quality checks. Surveys screen out answers that are rushed, inconsistent or random, and failed attention or captcha checks.
Why do I get invitations if my profile is complete?
Many of our partners cannot see the data in your profile, so their surveys check your details only after you open them.
How to be screened out less often
- Complete your profile and keep it up to date, so we can match you better.
- Answer honestly and consistently. Contradictory answers trigger screen-outs.
- Read each question carefully and do not rush.
- Respond to invitations quickly, before the groups fill up.
- Turn off your VPN.
Do I get anything for a screen-out?
Usually not. The reward is paid for surveys completed to the end. Some of TGM's own surveys add a small token amount for an unsuccessful attempt; partner surveys, such as Lucid and PureSpectrum surveys, do not. Answering the qualification questions quickly and honestly means you lose as little time as possible and can move on to the next survey.
I completed the survey but it shows as not qualified
This can happen. After a project ends, the survey provider verifies the answers. If your survey was completed correctly, its status is updated. Please be patient while this check takes place.
